If' you’ve hung with me over the last few months, you may have noticed that my posts are all over the place. You’d be right.
I’ve been circling around and around a center that I can’t yet see.
Like a black hole, I know it’s there but I can only describe the space around it. It’s like what you might say if I asked you to describe the flavor of chocolate or the color “yellow” or the emotion “love”. You know what they are, but it’s really hard to find the words to describe them.
This center that I’m searching for is a “between” place, a threshold between one truth and another. It’s intangible but not magic, real but I can’t put my finger on it.
I’ve lived my whole life in the liminal spaces—not one thing but not another. I see truths that others miss but I’m mystified by the truths that others see. Everything is shades of grey and layers of complexities. I feel like I’m always in a transition of some sort.
This has led to… complications. It’s hard to have relationships and make a living when I’m confounded by things that are obvious to others. It’s often hard to find common ground when I misinterpret what we’re talking about. It can feel lonely.
Do you know what I mean?
Some of you do. You’ve been living in the “between” spaces too.
If you’re a between-er (or even if you’re just between-curious), I have an new offering for you. Today I’m announcing my project with Emily Conway of A Thin Space: Threshold. These conversations explore the beauty and challenges of living at a threshold between one thing and another.
We’re hoping that this feels like home to you. You can “liminal-speak” (speak about the in-between to people who understand what you’re saying). You can find others who share your in-between experience. You can relax and feel like you belong.
It’s a relief, isn’t it?
Threshold: Living the In-between with Intention and awareness.
Emily and I have both spent decades navigating the land of uncertainty, the space in between, where many and no truths exist. We do this in our personal lives, and we can’t seem to help doing it in our professional lives as well.
Since we spend so much time in the liminal, we want to be in it with as much awareness and intention as we can manage.
During our live ”Threshold” chats, we’ll explore questions with no clear answers and solutions that shift and change dependent on circumstance and individual. We want to share our experiences, and we want to hear yours as we stand here, together, in the threshold.
Join us on Friday, June 6 @ 2:00CST for our first episode: What does it mean to be “authentic”? Scroll down for more details.
Who is Emily Conway?
For those of you who have subscribed for a while, you’ve met Emily before. Rather than try to describe how insightful and kind she is, why don’t you see for yourself? You can watch the interview I did with her here:
Spending Time in Thin Spaces
Emily Conway is thoughtful, funny, and deeply reflective—and that’s why I’m so excited to share this interview with her.
Threshold: FAQ
What is Threshold?
Threshold is live chat between Emily and myself. Think of it like a podcast. Each episode, Emily and I will explore how to live in liminal places with authenticity and awareness. In other words, how to be grounded in spaces that feel groundless.
What is Friday’s topic?
What does it mean to be “authentic”?
The words authenticity and authentic get used a lot in self-help, spiritual, and mindfulness circles. What do these words actually mean? And what does it mean to live an authentic life?
On Friday June 6th at 2pm CST, we’ll discuss these questions and our own relationships with authenticity.
What are the topics for June?
Here are the topics we have planned for June:
June 6 (Friday @ 2:00CST): What does it mean to be “authentic”?
June 13 (Friday @ 2:00CST): Speaking from the heart.
June 16 (Monday @ 11:00CST): How to find belonging.
June 23 (Monday @ 11:00CST): How to be in community (especially as an introvert).
Can I ask questions?
Yes! We’d love for you to join in. This is about community and spending time with people who get it.
Having said that, Emily and I are on a learning curve for this first episode. Until we figure out all the functionality, you may have to share your questions in the chat box. Eventually, we hope to have people join us LIVE.
How do I join?
If you have the Substack app on your phone, you’ll receive a notification before we begin. You can click on that to join us.
If you don’t use the Substack app, you will receive a notification email with a link to join. You can also give this link a try: Threshold (I’m still figuring out the technology but I think that will work.)
What if I can’t make it live?
These chats will be recorded and available on here and on A Thin Space.
I still don’t understand.
Send me an email! I love hearing from you. Really. 😊
