What does discipline feel like in your body?

It’s the beginning of Fall which, for some, is the beginning of a new year. The frenzied fun and activity of summer cools and the reflectiveness of autumn begins.

Darkness. Harvest. Cooler days. Oranges and reds.

For me, this time of year is the return to the regular routine of life. I resume my schedule and this is not without some struggle. It turns out, I like not working as hard. It requires a little fortitude to do what is required.

It requires discipline.

Generally, I don’t like the idea of discipline. It conjures the energy of hard edges, force, and constriction. It feels choiceless—or rather that the choices are Zero-Sum. I either comply or suffer consequences that are unacceptable.

But does discipline have to mean this?
